Publication Ethics

This journal adheres to the ethical standards and best practices established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) in addressing all aspects of publication ethics, particularly in handling cases of research and publication misconduct. All manuscripts involving human participants must comply with ethical principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki, while studies involving animals are required to follow the International Guiding Principles for Biomedical Research developed by the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS).

The Journal of Indonesian Nursing Science (JoINS) adopts COPE guidelines to uphold high ethical standards for publishers, editors, authors, and reviewers. Publication ethics is a fundamental component in maintaining and improving the quality of scientific research globally. Therefore, this journal clearly defines ethical responsibilities for all parties involved. The publisher has no authority to influence the scientific content of manuscripts and is solely responsible for supporting the publication process in a timely manner.

Ethical Responsibilities of Editors

  1. Editors are accountable for all articles published in the Journal of Indonesian Nursing Science.

  2. Editors assist authors in complying with the author guidelines, which are adapted from the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

  3. Editors may consult with fellow editors or reviewers when making final publication decisions.

  4. Manuscripts must be evaluated objectively based on academic merit alone, without discrimination related to the authors’ nationality, ethnicity, political views, race, religion, gender, academic rank, or institutional affiliation. Editors must recuse themselves from handling manuscripts in which a conflict of interest exists.

  5. Editors must ensure a double-blind review process by removing author identities from manuscripts sent to reviewers and vice versa.

  6. Editorial decisions must be communicated to authors along with reviewers’ comments, except when such comments contain offensive or defamatory content.

  7. Editors should consider authors’ reasonable requests to exclude specific individuals from the review process.

  8. Editors and editorial staff are required to maintain the confidentiality of all submitted manuscripts.

  9. In cases of suspected misconduct or authorship disputes, editors will follow COPE flowcharts and guidance.

Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers

  1. Reviewers are expected to identify and comment on ethical issues and potential research or publication misconduct.

  2. Reviews should be completed within the agreed timeframe, and reviewers must inform the editor promptly if they are unable to fulfill their review obligations.

  3. Reviewers must treat all manuscripts as confidential documents.

  4. Reviewers should decline review assignments if any conflicts of interest exist between themselves and the authors.

Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

  1. Authors confirm that the manuscript has not been previously published and that no publication rights have been transferred to another party.

  2. Authors must ensure the originality of their work and properly acknowledge and cite the work of others according to the journal’s reference style.

  3. Plagiarism and self-plagiarism are strictly prohibited.

  4. Fragmented or “salami” publication is not permitted in the Journal of Indonesian Nursing Science.

  5. Authorship must comply with the criteria established by the ICMJE, as described in the journal’s author guidelines.

  6. Authors must ensure that no personal information is included that could reveal the identity of patients. When patient photographs are essential for scientific purposes, written informed consent must be obtained and explicitly stated.

  7. For studies involving human subjects, authors must confirm that the research was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and relevant ethical review boards. If ethical concerns arise, authors must provide clarification. For animal studies, authors must confirm compliance with applicable national and international guidelines.

  8. Authors are required to provide original data and relevant documentation if questions arise regarding data fabrication or falsification.

  9. All potential conflicts of interest, including employment, research funding, consultancy fees, and intellectual property, must be fully disclosed using the ICMJE disclosure form.
