Abstract

Background: Shivering remains a common complication following spinal anesthesia and can negatively affect patient outcomes. Various factors may contribute to the occurrence of shivering, including the duration of surgery. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the duration of surgery and the incidence of shivering in patients after spinal anesthesia.

Methods: This study employed an analytical correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 105 respondents were selected using a consecutive sampling technique, with the sample size determined using the Slovin formula. Data were collected using observation sheets to assess the duration of surgery and the degree of shivering. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rho test with the aid of statistical software.

Result: The results showed that most surgical procedures lasted 60–120 minutes (94.3%). The majority of patients experienced grade 1 shivering (70.5%). Statistical analysis indicated a significant relationship between the duration of surgery and the incidence of shivering (p-value = 0.001; p < 0.05).

Conclusion: In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between the duration of surgery and the incidence of shivering in post-spinal anesthesia patients. Longer surgical duration is associated with a higher degree of shivering. These findings suggest the need for appropriate preventive strategies to reduce the risk of shivering in patients undergoing longer surgical procedures.
